Carbon Neutral 2030 - Here we come..
As part of our ongoing commitment to the environment and meet our carbon neutral by 2030 target, the Nurture Group have invested over £350K this year in new handheld electric equipment, replacing existing fossil fuel machinery. Currently 16% of the static sites we manage use fully electric handheld machinery, and this will increase to 63% by spring this year, with a target to have 90% of static sites using fully electric handheld equipment by spring 2022.
We have installed solar panels at our head office in Windlesham and implemented a companywide greener fleet policy, which will see all company cars be either electric, hybrid or plug in hybrid petrol within the next 3 years, and will install electric charge points at all main offices and depots.
We have also partnered with bp Target Neutral to offset our carbon emissions from fuel across our fleet of approx. 627 vehicles.
Carbon offsetting is a way to compensate for emissions by funding an equivalent reduction in carbon emissions elsewhere. Carbon offsets are created through financing activities that reduce or remove carbon emissions expressed as a carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) such as renewable energy development or projects that protect or enhance natural resources that absorb CO2e from the atmosphere – such as land and forests. These projects are awarded a carbon credit for each tonne of CO2e reduced or avoided.
Since 2006, bp Target Neutral has helped customers reduce and offset more than six million tonnes of carbon emissions by improving products and services and then offsetting residual emissions by purchasing carbon credits from a portfolio of projects around the world. As well as reducing emissions, these projects also contribute to improving the lives of millions of people through better access to energy, improved household health, education, and jobs. bp Target Neutral is not managed for profit and does not seek to make a return on the purchase and sale of carbon credits.
The Nurture Landscapes Group will be supporting a range of offset programmes such as construction of efficient cookstoves in Mexico, so families use less firewood and reduce smoke in the household. Other projects supported include forest protection and planting at the Rufansa Conservation, Zambia and the construction of biogas units in rural communities of India which cut indoor air pollution and the threat of respiratory disease in the home, as well as empowering women.

bp Target Neutral takes a quality-led approach to selecting carbon offsetting projects. Projects have to comply with international standards and demonstrate that emissions reductions are real, additional (i.e. that they would not have happened without the project), permanent and unique. As well as emissions reductions potential, we also ask that suppliers disclose their broader impact to society and the environment using the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) – goals such as good health and wellbeing, affordable and clean energy, decent work and economic growth.
